How do careers services meet the expectations that accompany these aspirations? The University of Nottingham, an established global university with campuses in Malaysia and China, attracts students from across the world. These students have diverse and culturally-specific career development needs, requiring skilled practitioners with knowledge of the global graduate opportunity structure.     Women In Mining Manual: A Guide to Integrating Women into the Workforce

    This document presents a guide to integrating women ino the workforce. In July 2007, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, entered into a three-year partnership with Lonmin, the world's third largest primary platinum producer, based in South Africa. The goal of the partnership is to promote the sustainable development of Lonmin's workforce and the communities that surround its mining operations. Considering that Lonmin has a legislative requirement, set by the South African Department of Mining, to integrate women into its workforce so that they make up 10 percent by 2010, a key focus of the partnership is to develop a Women in Mining (WIM) program. The Lonmin IFC Women in Mining Program seeks to promote the employment and retention of women in Lonmin's workforce. The target audiences for this manual are practitioners in the mining sector, development organizations and governments that are planning to integrate women into the mining workforce. This manual is written with an emphasis on women in mining, but can be applied to other extractive sectors and other heavy industries

    A Preliminary Study: Do Alternative Certification Route Programs Develop the Necessary Skills and Knowledge in Assistive Technology?

    A large number of special education teachers in the United States are prepared in alternative certification programs and insufficient empirical information exists regarding their knowledge of assistive technology. The purpose of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of alternatively licensed special education teachers\u27 knowledge, experience, and confidence with assistive technology. One-hundred twenty-three special education teachers who were enrolled in an alternative license program were surveyed. The data indicated a significant positive relation between teachers\u27 knowledge/usage and their confidence with assistive technology (r = .74; p \u3c .01). In addition, the extent to which the teachers\u27 perceived barriers to integrating assistive technology in the classroom were moderated by their level of confidence. The results are presented in the context of building special education teachers\u27 knowledge and skills as well as affective issues regarding assistive technology

    Abstract Background Silicone breast implants have been widely used for breast augmentation and reconstruction. During this time, silicone breast implants have undergone several modifications to improve their safety, quality, and clinical performance. Complications such as reoperation, capsular contracture, and rupture are risks often associated with breast implants. Objectives The authors conducted a retrospective study to analyze and report complication rates associated with Eurosilicone's (Eurosilicone S.A.S, Apt, Cedex, France) silicone gel–filled breast implants over a period of 5 years. Methods In this retrospective clinical study, 2151 women who underwent either breast augmentation or breast reconstruction with Eurosilicone breast implants were diagnosed. Data on early and late complications including implant removal (explantation/exchange), capsular contracture, and rupture were collected using questionnaires, completed by 39 surgeons across Italy. Results Of the 2151, only 60 patients (2.78%) required implant removal. Twenty-five patients experienced capsular contracture (Baker Grade III/IV), giving an actual rate of 1.2%. The actual rate of implant rupture confirmed by breast magnetic resonance images was 0.18% (4 implants). Six patients (0.27%) were diagnosed with breast cancer following breast augmentation, and local complications including hematoma (1 patient) and seroma (2 patients) were experienced. Conclusions This retrospective clinical study involving Eurosilicone's round and anatomical textured silicone gel–filled mammary implants demonstrates an excellent safety profile through 5 years.     Working With Faith-Based Communities to Develop an Education Tool kit on Relationships, Sexuality, and Contraception

    Communities disproportionately affected from higher rates of unplanned teen births are in need of sustainable approaches to prevention strategies. One approach is to build the capacity of faith-based communities (FBCs) to address the sexual health needs of the surrounding community. However there is a need for comprehensive, user-friendly resources designed for FBCs that provide critical decision-making information related to pregnancy prevention inclusive of contraception. Using community-based, theoretical and practice-informed strategies, we developed a user-friendly sexuality education tool kit in five phases: (1) building relationships with faith leaders; (2) piloting educational sessions within churches; (3) gaining insight from participating faith leaders; (4) creating the tool kit; and (5) collecting feedback from training and implementation. Our findings suggest faith leaders remained motivated to overcome perceived barriers by their mission to serve their communities. A sexuality education tool kit that is respectful and guided by the input of FBCs can be a viable and innovative approach to address teen pregnancy

    Leading from a Distance: Advancements in Virtual Leadership Research

    Although leadership has long been recognized as critical in virtual environments, observers have noted that a surprisingly small number of studies have focused on virtual leadership. In the current chapter we examine what we currently know about virtual leadership and identify promising future research directions. We begin by examining changes in the leadership context, most notably advances in technology and the growing adoption of virtual work arrangements. We then trace the evolution of the research that has examined virtual leadership at both the dyadic and team levels, highlighting key conceptual and empirical advances. Finally, we conclude the chapter by discussing future research directions that have the potential to make important contributions to both theory and practice in the area of virtual leadership
